Gymnastics for toddlers - The real-world alternative to screen time

24th Mar 2025

Recent headlines have warned that pre-school children's screen time is reaching crisis levels. Studies have shown that too much screen time can impact children’s attention spans, sleep quality and social development.

The BBC recently reported on growing concerns among parents and experts. In fact, Speech and Language Therapist Sandy Chapell, of Health Professionals from Safer Screens, has seen a decline in children’s communication skills over the last 10 years (BBC).

The latest school readiness study conducted by Kindred confirms a third of children starting Reception this year were not school-ready.

The benefits of gymnastics for toddlers

Gymnastics isn’t just about somersaults and cartwheels. It’s a full-body, brain-boosting activity that helps children grow physically, emotionally and socially – encouraging positive childhood development. Here’s how:

  • Structure & routine: Regular classes can help your toddler develop a sense of routine and discipline. Both of these are essential in early childhood development.
  • Communication & social skills: Interacting with our gymnastics coaches and other toddlers helps to build confidence and teamwork skills, fostering emotional intelligence.
  • Physical exercise: Jumping, rolling and climbing promote strength, flexibility and coordination. This sets a foundation for lifelong health.
  • Life skills & independence: Setting realistic goals and overcoming small challenges in class fosters problem-solving, resilience and adaptability. This provides your toddle with skills that extend beyond gymnastics.
  • Fun without screens: Exciting activities keep children engaged and entertained in a way that screens simply can’t, supporting a healthier, more active lifestyle.

The science behind real-world play

Active play stimulates brain growth, strengthens muscles and enhances emotional well-being. Physical movement in early childhood is directly linked to improved cognitive function, language development and social skills. Joining a gymnastics class provides a healthy alternative, ensuring children experience movement, challenge and joy.

Our structured, play-based environment gives your child the freedom to move while also providing a foundation of discipline and teamwork. Unlike screen-based entertainment, real-world play promotes creativity, independent thinking and resilience, which are crucial for your child’s holistic growth.

One small step towards a healthier future

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by screen time concerns, you’re not alone. The good news? Making small, positive changes like enrolling your child in gymnastics can have a big impact.

Parents often worry about balancing technology with real-world experiences. The best approach is not to eliminate screens entirely but to provide alternative activities that enrich your child’s development. Gymnastics provides a solution that is not only fun but also promotes lifelong skills that will benefit your child as they grow.

We offer a welcoming, supportive environment where children can grow, learn and thrive.
